<p>In life, we all must experience some quantity of anxiety or stress. This is undeniable. However, the level that several people have to deal with will for sure vary from person to person. In some instances, a person can have to cope with minor stress and anxiety while others may have to cope with the problem in its most extreme form: a panic attack.</p>
<p>A panic attack is a frightening event, mostly since it attacks and isolates a person all at once. The strength of any given attack will vary from person to person. Sometimes the attack is so intense its mistaken for a heart attack or a nervous breakdown. This can cause even more attack and fear for the person coping with it, which in turn will only get the panic attack worse, generating a vicious cycle.</p>
<p>And each time a person has an attack, it puts more stress on the heart. So the more often they suffer from panic attacks, the more likely that they are causing long term damage to their heart. It&#8217;s important not only to end the mental issues, but the physical tension caused by a panic attack.</p>
<p>Some people could not even be aware that they&#8217;re suffering from panic attack related issues. This is because they don&#8217;t know what the signs of a panic attack resemble. In order to help people who want to be able to spot a panic attack, here is a quick overview of the most common signs:</p>
<p>Many of the panic attack signs will seem to affect the afflicted&#8217;s head, such as a pronounced dizziness. Vertigo and lightheadedness do also belong to these types of signs.</p>
<p>These symptoms can be accompanied by a strange, dreamlike feeling that is quickly followed by disorienting perceptual distortions. This description doesn&#8217;t do justice to the actual experience, which is for sure disturbing. Since the majority people don&#8217;t even know they&#8217;re having a panic attack, their confusion can lead to even greater panic, which can have a profoundly negative psychological impact.</p>
<h3>Physical Signs Of Panic Attacks</h3>
<p>And then there are the physical side effects. Nausea and indigestion are often signs as the body begins to react to the irritation and stress of the attack. This can be mild or severe, depending on the person. For some, it could last for hours. This is not comfortable nor healthy, especially when it causes yet more anxiety and stress.</p>
<p>There are also physical symptoms that arise during a panic attack that can be like a heart attack, which is in many cases quite terrifying to the individual coping with them. These problems include breathing difficulties and chest pains.</p>
<p>Again, these signs are problems that are completely identical to suffering a heart attack. To say such sensations can be thoroughly scary would be quite understatement. And, as previously, mentioned the fear of having a heart attack could even generate to an real future heart attack.</p>
<p>Other physical issues can also manifest due to the psychological components of suffering a panic attack. For instance, an extreme panic attack can cause the onset of debilitating sensations of helplessness and terror.</p>
<p>Lots of individual have described the feeling of the walls closing in on them, and just wanting to escape. But these are emotional problems, and an individual cannot easily escape their own mind. This can be even more painful if the individual is unaware that they are suffering from an actual medical condition.</p>

<p>A medical condition known as panic disorder is more common today than many believe. It is a disorder where someone goes through recurring episodes of panic. An intense fear overcomes them and the main fear that grips many is the fear of it happening again in the future. These attacks generally last for short periods, but the discomfort and fear is intense. It is a treatable condition that affects people of all ages. Because of that, panic disorder symptoms in teens and children can be different than symptoms in adults.</p>
<p>It is more difficult for a youth to explain the psychological symptoms than it is the physical ones. That may be why the symptoms appear differently than in adults. Children are not equipped to accurately describe the intense feeling of fears they experience, although teens usually can. And, because these episodes come without warning and without reason, children may connect the attack with something or someone they have seen like a stranger or a dog at first.</p>
<p>The severity of symptoms may vary depending on where the child or teen is at when it occurs. At home they are freer to express themselves and may not hide the symptoms like they would at other places. That may be why in some cases there are more symptoms when they are at home rather than at school or out with friends.</p>
<p>A panic attack at home can have one or more symptoms to signal an attack is taking place. The episodes may seem to be more frequent and out of the blue and come with a fast pulse, chest discomfort, difficulty breathing, nausea, sweating, and even fainting. They may even express that they feel like they&#8217;re going crazy at times. Certain places in the home may be avoided as they fear an attack may occur when in those places. In a lot of cases, children are not able to explain the symptoms or why they are fearful.</p>
<p>When a child or teen experiences an attack at school, they usually try to hide the symptoms. That would explain why more attacks are reported to happen at home and less at school. At school they have the pressures of their surroundings and peers, creating the desire to hide the problem. This setting can also make them reluctant and unable to talk about the attack.</p>
<p>Like at home, the attacks can be recurrent and out of the blue. But other symptoms may include suddenly interrupting activities repeatedly without knowing why. <p>Panic attacks, in most cases, come without warning. A panic attack could happen anywhere provoked or unprovoked. It could even occur while the person diagnosed with it as at sleep.</p>
<p>Panic attacks could be one-time events, but most people experience repetitive episodes that may happen for years. People who have had a panic attack in the past could potentially experience more episodes in the future. Usually, panic attacks occur in places where they have first manifested or in circumstances that often provoke such attacks.</p>
<p>People who have panic attacks are not necessarily sick, because they are healthy, normal people who have minor issues with anxiety and fear. In fact, panic disorder often accompanies other psychological disorders or concerns such as phobias, depression and anxiety disorders.</p>
<p>Symptoms</p>
<p>The classic symptoms of panic attack include lightheadedness, feeling dizzy, irregular heartbeat, and general sense of having a heart attack. Most patients of panic disorder compare their experience with an overwhelming sense of impending doom or of going crazy. No wonder, it is easily considered as one of the most terrifying experiences a person could live through.</p>
<h3>Panic Disorder Symptoms</h3>
<p>A full blown episode of a panic disorder has the following physical and psychological symptoms:</p>
<p>Physical : Hyperventilation or shortness of breath, racing heart or heart palpitations, chest discomfort or pain, shaking or trembling, choking feeling, sweating, upset stomach or nausea, lightheadedness, hot or cold flashes, and tingling sensations throughout the body.</p>
<p>Psychological : Sense of being &#8216;spaced out&#8217;, fear of going crazy, of dying, and/or of losing control, unrealistic feeling with the body, and a sense of having a heart attack.</p>
<p>You may be having the condition if you :</p>
<p>Have had a panic attack at least once.</p>
<p>Worry excessively about experiencing another attack.</p>
<p>Start behaving differently because you are trying to minimize the chances of you having another attack.</p>
<p>Causes</p>
<p>The exact causes of panic disorder are yet to be fully discovered. However, experts have identified that it does run in the family, that is directly linked to major events in one&#8217;s life, and is deeply tied to traumatic experiences. It may also be tied to specific medical conditions such as hyperthyroidism, hypoglycemia, withdrawal from certain medications, mitral valve prolapsed and use of certain medications.</p>
<p>Treatments for Panic Disorder</p>
<p>There are treatment and therapy options for panic disorder. Among the therapy that produce the best results are:</p>
<p>Cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT &#8211; This is a quite popular technique used for treatment of several different psychological disorders such as anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, and other phobias. This therapy method focuses on fixing the patterns of behavior and thinking that provoke and sustain a panic attack. It teaches the patient to view his fear from a more realistic perspective.</p>
<p>Exposure therapy &#8211; Exposure therapy uses a controlled environment to trigger an attack. Thereby helping the patient to create coping mechanisms for better handling of the symptoms of each episode.</p>
<p>Other methods of treating panic disorder include the use of drugs such as antidepressants and benzodiazepines and application of self-help techniques.</p>

Most of us don&#8217;t give any thought to how we breathe but learning how to do it correctly can help you with treating panic attacks. You can reduce the frequency of your attacks and the length of the them when they do occur.</p>
<p>Breathe Right to Reduce Stress</p>
<p>There are basically two different types of breathing, chest breathing and abdominal breathing. As the name suggests, chest breathing is when you breathe mainly from the chest and is common leading up to and during an anxiety or panic attack. This type of breathing tends to consist of rapid and shallow breaths which upset the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the body. This type of shallow breathing can lead to dizziness, an increased heart rate and muscle tension.</p>
<p>Abdominal breathing, on the other hand, is characterized by deep, even breaths that are drawn down by the diaphragm. A newborn baby will do this, as will people when they are in a deep sleep &#8211; it&#8217;s the natural way to breathe.</p>
<p>You can easily determine which way you are breathing with this simple test. Place one hand on your chest and your other hand on your stomach. The hand that moves indicated the type of breathing you are doing &#8211; hand on stomach moving? You are abdominal breathing. Hand on chest moving? You are chest breathing. By understanding which breathing mode you are in, you will be on track to being able to control your panic and anxiety.</p>
<p>Breathe Deep and Relax</p>
<p>This simple technique can be used to help with treating panic attacks. They key is to practice this technique outside of those situations that make you anxious so that you can use it automatically when you start to feel anxious. (note: try practicing this when you can be alone, lying or sitting down at first. If you feel uncomfortable or dizzy stop immediately):</p>
<p>Relax your shoulders as much as you can. Put one hand on your stomach inhale slowly through your nose. When you are breathing through your diaphragm, your hand should rise and fall with each breath.</p>
<p>Exhale through your mouth without holding your breath. You don&#8217;t want to force the air out but let it exit your lungs naturally.</p>
<p>Try repeating this several times.</p>
<p>You can add another level to this relaxing breathing technique by turning it into a breathing mediation. To do this, you want to focus your attention on your breathing, letting all other thoughts drift away. As the air moves in and out of your body, keep your attention focused on how you hand rises and falls or how the breath moves in and out of your nose and mouth.</p>
<p>You can use proper breathing techniques for treating panic attacks and reducing the severity of them. When you add proper abdominal breathing to other techniques you may already be using against anxiety and panic attacks you will be well on your way to getting your life back.</p>
